E-mail from Rick Lewis, editor of Philosophy Now to Eric Hoffman, APA Executive Director, 18 March 1997. (edited text)

We have had a number of initial thoughts regarding the possible involvement of the APA in Philosophy Now. Perhaps you would like to discuss these with the people in the APA who are interested before we talk further.

What Philosophy Now could offer the APA:

Starting a magazine such as Philosophy Now is difficult, expensive and very time consuming. From the APA point of view, it could be advantageous to have involvement with an existing magazine.

1) Philosophy Now would be prepared to consider more articles from American sources for inclusion in Philosophy Now in order to give the magazine a greater American flavour. We would also be prepared for the APA to nominate philosophers who would gather potential American input. They would be given a credit in the magazine for this input, and be included in the editorial board listed on the contents page.

2) Philosophy Now could regularly set aside two pages of the magazine devoted to the APA for you to use as you required. For example, they could be used to publicise forthcoming philosophy events in the U.S., and to publicise the existence and purpose of the APA. All this within a magazine with is already up and running.

3) Alternatively, the APA might prefer to produce a 4-page newsletter aimed at the general American public, which could be inserted just in those copies of Philosophy Now destined for American subscribers and bookstores. The newsletter could either be printed in the U.S> and then shipped to Britain to be inserted in copies of the magazine before it was sent back to the U.S. or (probably cheaper) you could just send us the camera-ready artwork and we could oversee its production at a UK printer. (Of course, the APA would then pay for printing and additional mail charges).

4) At present, most advertising within Philosophy Now is from UK-based philosophy publishers, but we would be prepared to pay the APA on an agreed upon basis for any U.S. advertising that it brought in.

What the APA could offer Philosophy Now:

1) In return for all of the above, we would like you to encourage your members to subscribe to Philosophy Now, and promote the magazine to the wider American public where possible.

2) Additionally, we believe that a link to the APA could enable us more easily to persuade major American philosophers to write for the magazine.

I hope that these may form a basis for future discussion between us.
