Philosophy Goes Public
This website is in the process of development. Feel free to send e-mail to its author
Purpose:
This website exists to facilitate a discussion among professional philosophers interested in promoting the development of a periodical which presents philosophical ideas and their supporting arguments to the college-educated public in a readable, non-technical style.
This discussion has grown anew at the encouragement of Prof. Eric Hoffman, Executive
Director of the American Philosophical Association. But all financial costs
of the discussion, including travel to APA conferences, are borne by the discussants themselves.
What follows on this website are letters expressing various ideas and plans
regarding the prospects for the periodical, names of interested parties, addresses and links.

Summary of Current State of the Project
There was a 2 hour "Talk with the APA" scheduled for and held in Philadelphia on Monday, December 29, 1997 chaired by Eric Hoffman and Philip Quinn, including as participants R. S. Pfeiffer, J. Adler, C. Echelbarger and P. Hare. Also on the program was R. Lewis, editor of Philosophy Now, a quarterly magazine of ideas for the educated public published in London, U.K. Approximately thirty-five philosophers attended and expressed strong general support for the idea of a philosophy periodical presenting philosophical ideas and arguments in a non-technical way to the educated public. R. Lewis' presentation was interesting and attractive, and many thought that philosophers should support Lewis' endeavor and try to help improve and build it. After the meeting, Eric Hoffman encouraged Pfeiffer to talk with Lewis and help organize U.S. support and development of Philosophy Now. As a result, there is movement afoot to develop a U.S. Board of Editors and a U. S. Board of Editorial Advisors. Anyone interested in joining such a board should send Pfeiffer a copy of one's vita and a statement of interest. In the meantime, everyone interested should first of all subscribe to Philosophy Now. Information to do so can be found by following the link at the bottom of this page.
