ABOUT FUSION →
Fusion is more than a Delta College Student publication. Fusion is more than the sum of its parts. The 'producing a student publication' course brings together two entirely different specializations and comes to fruition when they coalesce. One class, comprised of graphics and art students, helmed by Professor of Art, Randy Crawford, maintains artistic control of the book. Students do everything from selecting the artwork to laying out page spreads to overseeing the physical publication. They sort through hundreds of pieces of artwork, choosing the best, most interesting, and overall intriguing works to grace the pages of Fusion. Besides the physical publication of the book, students also developed a DVD featuring every piece received by the class as well as this website, which offers a smaller, but equally interesting selection of art and writing. The other face of this two-headed monster is the English class, manned by Associate Professor of English, Jeff Vande Zande. This handful of talented students guide a portion of the book just as important as the artwork: the meat of the book... the poems and stories. They select, proofread, and hand-type thousands of words on thousands of lines in hundreds of paragraphs to aide in making Fusion the publication it has grown to be.
This class provides a guided opportunity to learn about publishing by compiling, selecting, editing, and designing an annual publication of student writing, photography, and artwork. It focuses on hands-on experience in critical reading, writing, and thinking; editing; layout; production details; marketing; design; and distribution. Students control every facet of the book, guided skillfully by both Randy and Jeff.
