What Fire Science Associate Degree Options are available?

The Associate degree program in Fire Science is designed to provide vocational and technical skills which will provide you with educational credentials for employment or promotional opportunities. 

Six options are available related to fire science and safety; 

          -Fire Fighter Technician 

          -Fire Investigation/Prevention 

          -Fire science Technology 

          -Industrial/Commercial security & Safety 

          -Leadership & Training 

          -Emergency Medical Services

How many options can be completed and appear on my degree?

Students may choose two of the options, which will appear on their degree. Students wishing more options could complete a second degree with a minimum of 24 additional credit hours. 

How many credit hours are required for Associate degree?

You must earn a minimum of 62 semester hours and meet the requirements of option(s) you choose, have a 2.0 in specified courses, and earn 24 semester hours through Delta College. 

Are these accredited degree programs?

Yes, Delta College is accredited by and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). Several occupational academic programs have received additional certification from their corresponding professional boards, councils, or regulatory groups. 

What is the admission criteria or requirements?

Delta College has an "open door" policy which allows admission of persons from varying ages, backgrounds, interests, and abilities. You are not required to have a minimum grade point average or certain test scores to be granted general admission to the college. Your general admission, however, does not guarantee entry into all academic programs within the college. 

What is admission procedures and fee?

Current admissions fee is required when application is filed. Application may be obtained through the Admission Office, (989) 686-9093. After you apply you will receive a prompt response to your mailed admission Application. Upon acceptance, you will be issued a student number and additional information. 

What information should be submitted with my application for admission?

Along with the completed application, you should include: 

          -Current non-refundable application fee 

          -Official transcripts from all institutions you attended. 
          This should include the National Fire Academy (NFA). 
          Mailed directly to:

Will I receive academic credit for certification and work life experiences?

Yes, you may receive up to 27 credit hours for "Credit-By-Training" (CBT) for certification, and up to 38 credit hours for both "Credit-By Training and Credit-By-Portfolio" (CBP). 

You should submit copies of all certificates for preliminary evaluation for credit to:

Can a Fire Science Associate's Degree be completed Distance delivery?

Yes, you may complete your degree through our distant learning program. Distance Learning provides an alternative way to take college credit courses. Using the telecommunication technology, students can take classes from home or work site. Courses are delivered through Independent Study (IS), Telecourse, and Internet. 

Will my transcript indicate distance delivery?

No, your transcript will be the same as if you were an on-campus student. 

Can I register at any time?

Yes and no, for any Fire Science IS course you may enroll at any time. You must contact the Fire Science Coordinator (989) 686-9020 prior to enrollment. General Education courses, like on-campus programs, follow the semester schedule. You will need to register for these courses by the prescribed deadlines noted in course schedule posted on Delta's webpage: www.delta.edu 

How will I get my assignments to instructor?

You may mail, fax, e-mail or internet your homework to your professor. The professor will let 
you know their preference. 

How are exams administered?

Each student is required to designate a proctor. Exams are sent directly to the proctor, along with 
the guidelines to follow in administrating the exam. The proctor then immediately mails the exam back 
to the appropriate person at Delta College. 

Why do I need a proctor for examinations?

This requirement protects the interest of the student and ensures that the academic integrity of the program in not compromised. Internet course exams can be administered on-line. 

Who can be my proctor?

Your Fire Department Chief or Training Officer, college teacher, local librarians, or a member of clergy may proctor exams. Delta College reserves the right to verify a proctor's identity, to require additional proof of eligibility or to require the selection of a different proctor. 

My department or company is paying my tuition. How does this process work?

Courses have to be paid at the time of registration or a letter of billing authorization provided. This 
letter must be on official letterhead bearing name and billing address, state authorization for student to 
enroll in specific course, and signed by authorized person. 

Check with your organization if you pay tuition up front and are reimbursed upon completion of
course. 

Is tuition the same for on-campus courses as for distance learning?

Yes, tuition is based on in-district, out-district, and out-state rate. 

Full payment of tuition, registration and course fees is required at time of registration. 

What is registration and course fees?

A one time per semester registration fee is charged and a small course fee based on contact hours of 
course(s). Additionally, all Internet courses have a technology fee per credit hour. 

How do I receive a copy of my transcript?

For a copy of your transcript, you may apply in person at Records & registration (B-101); request 
by mail or faxing a letter of request to (989) 667-2221. Confirmation is recommended by calling 
(989) 686-9305. There is no charge for transcripts, however, a $10.00 charge for same day service. 
Ordinarily transcripts are mailed within one week. You may also view your transcript online by clicking on the Transcript link in MyDelta.

When I complete my Associate's Degree can I transfer to a University?

Yes, 3+1 with Northwood in BBA Fire Science Management
