TOUR ASSESSMENT PAPERS
Tour Assessment Papers must be written for each institutional tour.
These papers, based on tour attendance, will constitute 30% of your overall
grade. The papers are due at the beginning of class, on the date
indicated. The following information provides the criteria
for writing the impression paper. Ask the instructor if you have questions!
Failure
to follow directions will result in a loss of points.

NO LATE PAPERS will be accepted; papers are always
due the week after the tour.
General Formatting Instructions:

A cover page should include the institution's name, location and security
level(s), the name and rank/position of the person leading the tour and
date of the tour, as well as your name and the date of submission.

The papers must be a minimum of three (3) FULL typewritten pages
of text; one-half or three-quarters of a page does NOT constitute a “full
page.

The text must be double-spaced, with one-inch (1”) top, side, and bottom
margins. Note: Check your margins—because I will!

The font may be no larger than 12 point and should be in standard Times
New Roman, Arial, or standard typeface if using a typewriter. Do
not type the text of your paper in boldface type, except to emphasize specific
words or phrases. Type only in black type.

Paragraphs should be indented ½” (five spaces on a typewriter).
Since the paper is double-spaced, do NOT leave extra spaces between paragraphs.

Papers will be graded on content and format, as well as neatness, spelling,
punctuation, proper usage of the English language. The ability to write
well and to utilize available resources is an important skill for a Corrections
Officer.
Content:
Impression papers are a subjective assessment, analysis, and synopsis
of the institutional tour and the presentation of the tour leader; in other
words, your impressions tour. Since this is subjective, your opinions
are important and should be the primary consideration in this paper. Your
discussion should include:

What was your impression of the tour leader, his/her knowledge/experience
& presentation?

What was your perception of the duties of a corrections officer are
based on what you saw...is it congruent with what you have learned in class
and / or have heard from others? Why or why not?

What were the duties of the different officers you saw? Is there
a position you would prefer to work? Why or why not?
-
How would you describe the interaction between the staff and inmates?
What were your impressions of these interactions?

How would you describe the interaction between officers? What
were your impressions of these interactions?

What were the visible security features that distinguish this security
level(s)?
-
What were the security procedures involved that distinguish this security
level(s)?
-
Did you see or hear anything that made a significant impression on you?
If so, what was it, and what caused it to make such an impression?

What was your overall impression of this facility? Why?
Do you think you would want to work at this facility? Why or why
not?
-
How did this facility differ from the previous facility you have toured
this semester?
